The Marion School District will pivot to a virtual learning day on Friday, March 5, to accommodate a second Covid-19 vaccination clinic for faculty and staff. The clinic will allow staff members who received their first shot on February 5 to receive their second dose. This is part of our continuing efforts to provide the safest possible learning environment for our students. Because of the challenges associated with the large number of doses of the vaccine, securing the appropriate personnel to administer the vaccine, and other logistical issues connected with a vaccination event of this scale, the Marion School District again opted to pivot to virtual learning for the day. Meals for Friday will be sent home with students on Thursday afternoon, along with the regular weekend meal distribution. Regular school schedules will resume on Monday, March 8. This process is a vital step in protecting the health and safety of both our staff and students. As always, we thank you for your patience and support as we continue to navigate this ongoing health crisis and this unprecedented school year.

Ronald McNair was an MIT-trained physicist who specialized in laser research before joining NASA in the late 1970s. In February 1984, he became just the second African American to reach space, serving as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. On January 28, 1986, he was one of the seven crew members killed when the Challenger shockingly exploded 73 seconds after liftoff.

When the Little Rock Nine walked into Central High School in 1957, the entire country was watching. What Americans didn’t see, though, was the woman who organized those Black students: Daisy Gatson Bates.
