🍂 Kindergarten STEM Lab Spotlight: Creating Deciduous Tree Models!
We are excited to share a recent project from our Kindergarten STEM Lab! Our students completed an engaging, hands-on activity where they used crushed, collected leaves from the school yard to create beautiful models of deciduous trees. This project was a powerful way to integrate science and art, reinforcing key learning standards in a fun, tangible manner.
🔬 Science Connections: Exploring Nature’s Patterns
This activity helped students observe and understand the basic needs of plants and how their environment changes.
Learning Focus: We met science standards that involve using observations to describe patterns in nature. By collecting and using fallen leaves, students directly observed a key characteristic of deciduous trees: the seasonal change where they shed their leaves. This leads to important conversations about the parts of a plant and what trees need to grow.
A "Model" Approach: Creating the artwork itself served as a scientific model. This practice teaches our young learners how to represent real-world objects to better understand them, which is a foundational skill in engineering and science.
🎨 Art Connections: Creating with Natural Materials
The project also covered key visual art standards by encouraging creativity and material exploration.
Creating with Purpose: Students practiced using mixed media (glue, paper, and natural found objects) to communicate a story or observation about a familiar object—the tree. This helps them explore new materials and understand that art can be made using much more than just crayons!
Connecting Learning: By modeling the tree, students learned that art can connect to other subjects, helping us understand science concepts in a visual and hands-on way.
🏡 At-Home Extension Activities
You can extend this learning with your kindergartner at home by continuing to explore the natural world around you:
Go on a "Parts of a Tree" Scavenger Hunt: Take a walk and look closely at trees. Ask your child to point out the trunk, branches, and leaves. Talk about why a tree needs strong roots and sunlight to survive.
Nature Collage: Encourage your child to collect other interesting small, natural items (small twigs, pebbles, pine needles, or seeds). Provide paper and glue, and let them create their own unique nature collage. This reinforces using "found objects" as art material.
Observe Seasonal Change: If the trees in your neighborhood are still changing, take pictures of the same deciduous tree once a week. Compare the photos to observe the pattern of change over time. Discuss why leaves change color and drop off.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting our students' learning across all subjects!IMG_5452.jpegIMG_5450.jpeg

🌊 MST 3rd Graders Dive Into Sea Levels! 🌊
This week, our 3rd graders wrapped up Module 1 in Literacy, which focused on “Over the Sea.” To bring their learning to life, they collaborated with the MST Library for a hands-on science connection about sea levels!
During the activity, each student mixed together different liquids to represent the layers of the sea, exploring how density affects how liquids stack. It was a fun, engaging way to make literacy and science come together—right here at MST Magnet! 💡⚙️📚
