JONESBORO --- For the first half here last Friday night, the Marion Patriots looked like a team ready to seize its playoff destiny.
Marion led 14-7 late in the second period in a contest that would go a long way towards settling the last two playoff spots from the 6A East in this year’s playoff field.
Instead, Jonesboro scored a touchdown late in the quarter to tie the game at halftime and never looked back as the Hurricane pulled away for a 49-14 decision at Cooksey Johns Field.
The Patriots got a pair of rushing touchdowns from sophomore Drace McGee (4 yards and 2 yards) to build that 14-7 lead late in the half.
Marion marched with the opening kickoff to the end zone and McGee’s run gave the Pats a 7-0 lead with 9:38 left in the first period.
Jonesboro got even on the ensuing drive when tailback Tevin Oliver scored to tie the contest at 7.
McGee’s 2-yarder gave the Pats the lead back at 14-7 with 4:10 left in the first quarter, and that score held until the end of the frame.
In fact, that lead carried until there were 12 seconds left in the first half, when Jonesboro took advantage of a high snap for a punt, and Oliver tied the game with a 2-yard TD, tying the game at 14 at the half.
