First, I would like to welcome you to our class. I look forward to meeting everyone and working together to have a productive year.
**In fifth grade, we have six academic subjects: Reading, Spelling, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Reading, spelling, and language are taught in a time block that consists of one hour and thirty minutes each day. Each of the other classes are taught in fifty minute blocks of time each day. We have a fifty minute activity period everyday. Students will have art, music, p.e., library, and AR. Students also have 30 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes of physical activity everyday. As you can see, our day is very busy, so it is important that absences are kept at a minimum.
**Some students may have other teachers during the day for the reading and math blocks. Mrs. Pirani will teach Science to all of my students, while I teach Social Studies to her class. If your child has other teachers for any of their subjects, it is important that you meet with each of them as soon as possible.
**We will do several fun projects in Science and Social Studies throughout the year as well as visit Parkin Archaeological State Park. This field trip is usually in September or October.
**AR is very IMPORTANT!!!! Each nine weeks your child's AR average percent correct and percent of goal will be averaged into their reading grade. These two grades can make a huge difference in your child's reading grade on their report card. Please encourage them to read, read, read!!!!! Reading builds vocabulary and can help them in all subject areas. I have prize buckets for students who make 100's on AR tests. If you have anything you would like to donate to our buckets, please feel free to send it.(happy meal toys, stickers, tatoos, bouncy balls, books, etc...)
**Please check your child's AGENDA each night. The agenda will be the easiest way for us to communicate. Students will write all of their homework assignments, test dates, and any special events in the agenda. Any notes that I need to send to a parent will be written in the agenda or stapled to it. If you need to send a note, please write it in their agenda or attach it to it. I ask that parents sign their child's agenda EVERY NIGHT. This is very important.
**Students may earn the opportunity to bring snack bags to enjoy during class. To earn a snack bag, they must earn 10 stickers. Stickers are awarded every Friday. Students earn one sticker for having their agenda signed each night. They earn one sticker for not getting their name on the clipboard during the week(good behavior). They earn a sticker for returning their paper packets on Wednesday. Some weeks there may be opportunities to earn more stickers. They love to eat in class, so this is a great motivator for many students!!!!
**I look forward to a wonderful year!! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns. | | |
