School Background [Top of Page]

Today we learn; tomorrow we lead!

At Avondale Elementary School we realize that the students we teach today will be the leaders of our nation in the future. It is our desire to provide our students with the very best opportunity to learn and to become those leaders of tomorrow.

Marion School District includes the northwestern one-third of West Memphis, Arkansas. Avondale Elementary School, a part of Marion School District, is located in the northwest corner of the city of West Memphis at the corner of Crestmere Street and Dover Road. The campus covers approximately six acres and consists of one large building that serves all kindergarten, prefirst, and first grade students in Marion School District.

Approximately 600 students attend school at Avondale. The Avondale staff includes thirty regular classroom teachers, three special education teachers, a P. E. instructor, a music teacher, and two Reading Recovery teachers. Two speech therapists, six Title I aides, four special education aides, a full-time principal, assistant principal, librarian, nurse, and counselor also serve AES students. The Avondale office is served by two secretaries and a bookkeeper. There are also seven cafeteria workers and three custodians to complete our staff.

Avondale also serves thirty four-year-old students in an ABC Preschool program, which is funded by a state grant. In order to qualify for this program, students must have at least one of the “at risk” factors that are listed on the Arkansas Better Chance application. Students are served according to the greatest degree of need based on the number of “at risk” factors that can be documented. The staff of this program consists of a teacher and two instructional assistants.

Avondale houses a preschool class for children with special needs which is provided and funded by the Crowley’s Ridge Educational Service Cooperative. Approximately fifteen three-and four-year-old students are served in this class. It is staffed with a teacher, an instructional assistant, and a speech therapist.

Avondale is fully accredited by both the Arkansas Department of Education and the North Central Association. The Avondale Elementary School curriculum meets and exceeds the Arkansas Academic Content Standards outlined in the Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks. All students receive instruction in language arts, math, science and social studies. Special emphasis is placed on developing the critical skills necessary to become proficient readers, writers, thinkers, and problem solvers. The Avondale curriculum stresses academic and social development and is designed with developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences that build the skills our students need for the world today.

A carefully planned and aligned curriculum, an excellent staff, and the cooperation, participation, and support of our parents and community make Avondale a great place for a child’s formal education to begin!

For additional information about our school, you may view our report card at the Arkansas School Information Site.
